Description: A fracture in the knee, most commonly in the third carpal bone. Fractured knees

Cause: Hyper-extension resulting from fatigue or poor confirmation.

Treatment: Usually surgery and rest.

Prognosis: Likely to resume work but at a reduced load. Eventually, arthritic changes in the joint may reduce flexibility and limit how much work the horse can tolerate.
