Description

It’s a Wonderful Life! Just like the classic holiday movie, Wonderful Life, also known as “Patricia” in the barn, is charming and uplifting. She likes to hang out with her head poking into the isle to see who might be coming to scratch her head. She is an easy buddy in turnout, and loves the company of the two other mares that she goes out with. Around the barn, she has learned her ground manners and walks politely next to her handler (stop when you stop, etc). Patricia especially loves to be groomed and the one-on-one attention that goes with it. She post-ties and stands on crossties politely as well. She has been an easy-maintenance kind of horse, which a good appetite and even happily barefoot.

Under saddle, Patricia has learned exponentially. She is very brave and marches around the ring with confidence, but we are still working on self-carriage and lateral balance. She is learning to relax and to accept light bit contact while moving off the rider’s leg, and she is ready to keep learning in her new home. Patricia would benefit most from an experienced rider, who has worked with young horses before, but who doesn’t aspire to compete in high-level work or jumping disciplines.

Wonderful Life is Retrained & Remarkable Challenge eligible. As such she will receive a shipping credit of up to $500, and an invitation to compete in Challenge-specific classes at the 2019 New Vocations Charity Horse Show Series. R&R adopters who choose to participate in the competition will be eligible to compete for $5,000 in cash and prizes; they will also receive a FREE stall at the Charity Horse Show and FREE entry into Challenge classes.

ADOPTION FEE POLICY

New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, a fee is set for each horse that will ultimately help the horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means the program cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.

Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated and worked with by a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses the history of each horse and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.

While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that the costs associated with the ongoing care and additional training for each horse post-adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront that he or she will have more funds available to cover the ongoing costs of properly caring for a horse.
