Tall, talented, and handsome? Pick your jaws off the floor and regulate your heartbeat because this gelding is stepping right out of your daydreams! “Reggie” is a big, goofy four year-old with the build of a warmblood and a pedigree which includes some great thoroughbred sporthorse producers. This is an incredible opportunity to own a well bred and very professionally raised baby. Reggie has known nothing but the best of care his whole life and it is evident when you are around him.
On the ground, Reggie’s manners are very good for a young horse. While not the smartest in the herd, Reggie is very proud and walks with an air of class that makes him stand out from the others. He enjoys going outside and playing with the other young gelding he is turned out with, but will chill calmly in his stall during the day interacting with people as they go by. Reggie is quite a lovebug, appreciating ear scratches and hugs. He crossties well and will stand at attention waiting for his person to come back, nickering out to them when they return to sight – he truly is a very personable animal! Bathing, trailering, standing for the farrier, and grooming are not a problem for him at all.
Under saddle, Reggie displays quality movement and a solid understanding of rhythm for a larger horse. He is learning to balance both directions and is getting stronger on his right lead. Reggie is responsive to his rider’s aids and is very comfortable following your lead when presented with new challenges with a confident, quiet rider. His biggest goal right now is to learn to lighten and rock back on his hind end at the trot and canter. His beautiful uphill build would lend itself greatly in the jumper ring, but his A+ movement and stockier, sporty look would also allow him to excel in the hunter ring – however, he we believe he will be successful in any discipline. On August 24th, Reggie was part of the group that went to our New Vocations hunter pace at Scheffelridge Farm and hacked out in the group like a pro! He jumped around in the hunt field and along the trail. With the lovely temperament and attitude he displayed we believe he would be a stellar foxhunting prospect!!
Reggie is suitable for an advanced rider who is experienced bringing along young horses who can really bring forth his true potential.
ADOPTION FEE POLICY
New Vocations’ adoption fees are intentionally set lower than the cost of buying most Thoroughbreds or Standardbreds through a private seller. In today’s market, it’s not unusual for horses coming right off the track to be listed for sale at a price between $2,000 and $5,000. At New Vocations, a fee is set for each horse that will ultimately help the horse find a home quickly. The program’s facilities are always at full capacity, which means the program cannot take in an additional horse until one is adopted. Adopters should be encouraged to know that by adopting a horse through New Vocations, they are actually helping two horses transition to careers outside of racing.
Additionally, adopters get great value for their money: The majority of the horses have been in the program for a minimum of 60 days. During that time, horses are rehabilitated (if needed), socialized with other horses, fully evaluated and worked with by a professional trainer. New Vocations fully discloses the history of each horse and provides all available medical records, many of which include X-ray and ultrasounds.
While adoption fees are low, it should be noted that the costs associated with the ongoing care and additional training for each horse post-adoption can be high. New Vocations hopes that by helping an adopter save money upfront that he or she will have more funds available to cover the ongoing costs of properly caring for a horse.
