New Vocations doesn’t take vaccinations lightly – we are lucky enough to receive support from many generous animal-health entities, including Zoetis and Boehringer Ingelheim, as well as many local and national retailers who work with us to ensure that our horses are protected from virus and disease.

With horses that ship from all over the United State to our locations in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Kentucky, our staff works diligently to ensure that the American Association of Equine Practitioner’s core vaccines are administered to our horses.

Core vaccines are those “that protect from diseases that are endemic to a region, those with potential public health significance, required by law, virulent/highly infectious, and/or those posing a risk of severe disease. Core vaccines have clearly demonstrated efficacy and safety, and thus exhibit a high enough level of patient benefit and low enough level of risk to justify their use in the majority of patients.”

The AAEP considers the following vaccines as “core,” meaning that all horses, no matter their location or occupation, should be vaccinated for them to protect their wellbeing:

  • Eastern/Western Equine Encephalomyelitis
  • Rabies
  • Tetanus
  • West Nile Virus

While our horses also traditionally receive rhino/flu boosters (rhinopneumonitis/influenza) in addition to these core vaccines, these boosters are not considered “core” vaccines by the AAEP. The horses coming into our care have traveled and been exposed to many other horses, so protecting them from additional disease exposure is paramount.

New Vocations typically administers a five-way “combo” to horses in our care. These types of vaccines come in three-, four-, five- and six-way combinations, which protect horses from a variety of illnesses. These combination vaccines include a mix of Equine Influenza, Eastern, Western and Venezuelan Encephalomyelitis, Rhinopneumonitis and Tetanus.

We are lucky enough to utilize Big Dee’s Bonus Bucks Program to receive many of our vaccines. This program allows our adopters and supporters to designate the equivalent of 5 percent of all their purchases to New Vocations.

Interested in helping us keep our horses safe? Simply designate “New Vocations” in the comments box or use the code NVRA. A customer can also call Big Dee’s and tell a representative to designate New Vocations as their ongoing charity. Big Dee’s will then automatically donate 5 percent of the amount of every purchase to New Vocations.

This generous show of support from Big Dee’s amounts to several thousand dollars annually to purchase much needed equine supplies and health products.
